What is the "snap back" effect?

The string owes its unique spin-generating capabilities to its special surface structure. It is rough to the touch, being composed of small indentations. Many people think that such a rough surface "grips" the ball better and thus generates additional topspin. This is not entirely true. The topspin is created by the so-called "snap back" effect, which is the movement of the vertical strings during impact. Thanks to the aforementioned indentations on the surface, a thin layer of air is created between the intersecting strings, reducing friction. As a result:

• the strings work better during impact, giving the ball additional spin
• less temperature is generated, which extends the string's lifespan
