Badminton Racket Stringing

The stringing in a racket is a key element affecting control, dynamics, and the durability of the equipment. Its tension and thickness have a huge impact on the characteristics of play. How to choose the right settings and how often to replace the string? Check out our guide!

What string tension to choose?

The stringing tension of a badminton racket ranges from 8–15 kg, and its choice affects playing comfort and the effectiveness of shots.

  • Low tension (8–10 kg)
✔ Greater elasticity – the so-called catapult effect.
✔ Better vibration dampening, greater shot power.
❌ Less control over the shuttlecock.
  • Medium tension (10–12 kg)most frequently chosen by players
✔ Optimal balance between power and control.
    ✔ Good shuttlecock feel.
    ✔ Sufficient string durability.
  • High tension (12.5–15 kg)
✔ Maximum control and shot precision.
✔ Less string deformation upon shuttlecock impact.
❌ Reduced dynamics and greater transfer of vibrations to the racket.
    ❌ Shorter string lifespan.

Tip: Professional players often use tension in the upper range, but for most players, 10–12 kg is optimal.

String thickness and durability

  • Thinner string (0.62–0.66 mm)
✔ Greater dynamics and shuttlecock feel.
❌ Shorter lifespan – wears out faster.
  • Thicker string (0.68–0.72 mm)
    ✔ Greater durability.
❌ Less noticeable rebound, less elasticity.

The best choice? If you care about longer lifespan, choose a string with a thickness of 0.68 mm or more. If you prefer a better feel and dynamics – a thinner string will be a better solution.

How does stringing change during play?

Each shuttlecock impact causes string deformation, which over time loses its properties:

  • Tension drop – strings stretch, and shot control decreases.
  • Surface wear – nicks and fraying appear on the string.
  • Breakage – often at the string crossover point or near the frame (especially with poor hitting technique).

When to replace racket strings?

The most common mistake players make is waiting for the string to break on its own – this is a serious oversight!

  • Basic rule:
Strings should be replaced regularly – no less than 3 times a year (even if they haven't broken).
  • How to tell if the string is worn out?
✔ Deterioration of shot control and dynamics.
✔ Strings show visible fraying and nicks.
✔ Shuttlecock rebound is less precise and "soft".

String wear test
Play for a few weeks with one racket, then switch to an identical racket with new strings. The difference in shuttlecock rebound will be huge – a sign that it's time for a replacement!

Is it worth investing in regular string replacements?

  • Yes! Regular replacement allows you to maintain:
Shot consistency – better game precision.
    Optimal control and dynamics.
Racket protection – old strings can cause frame damage.

Professionals replace strings every few weeks – it's worth following their example and taking care of your equipment to make the game even more enjoyable and effective!
