Choosing the right squash racket string has a huge impact on control, hitting power, and playing comfort. Here's key information to help you make the right choice.

Types of Squash Strings

Synthetic Strings (most popular)

  • Made from nylon, polyester, or other composite materials.
  • Offer good durability and a balance between power and control.
  • Ideal for players of all levels.

Natural Gut Strings

  • Made from natural fibers, providing maximum ball feel and playing comfort.
  • Very expensive and less durable.
  • Recommended mainly for professionals.

Stringing and Playing Style – What Tension to Choose?

String tension affects control and hitting power. Values are given in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lbs).

  • Low tension (9-11 kg) – greater hitting power, but less control.
  • Medium tension (11-13 kg) – a compromise between power and precision.
  • High tension (13-15 kg) – greater control and ball feel, but less power.

For beginners, a string tension of 10-12 kg is recommended, while for advanced players, 12-14 kg.

String Gauge – How Does It Affect Play?

  • Thinner (1.10-1.20 mm) – better feel and ball spin, but shorter lifespan.
  • Thicker (1.20-1.30 mm) – more durable, provides greater longevity, but at the expense of precision.

If you frequently break strings, choose a thicker model. If you prioritize better ball feel – a thinner one.

How Often to Replace Strings?

This depends on playing intensity, but a general rule of thumb is:

  • Replace your strings as many times a year as you play times a week. (Play once a week? Replace strings once a year.)
