What is the "snap back" effect?

The string owes its unique ability to impart spin to its special surface structure. It is rough to the touch, composed of small indentations. Many people think that such a rough surface "grips" the ball better, thus generating additional topspin. That's not entirely accurate. The so-called "snap back" effect, which is the movement of the vertical strings during impact, is responsible for topspin. Thanks to the aforementioned indentations on the surface, a thin layer of air is created between the intersecting strings, reducing friction. As a result:

• the strings work better during impact, giving the ball additional spin
• less heat is generated, which extends the string's lifespan
