Choosing a Tennis Racket – What to Look For?

Choosing the right racket is one of the most important challenges for every tennis player. Will a lighter and larger racket be better, or a more compact and heavier one? Manufacturers offer a multitude of models, which can make decision-making difficult. To facilitate this choice, we have prepared a detailed guide, divided into two groups – for beginners and intermediate players.

Racket for Beginner Tennis Players

One of the most common mistakes made by people starting to play tennis is buying a racket for advanced players. Such equipment requires appropriate technical skills, and its price can be high. If you're just starting, invest in a racket suited to your level – it will make learning easier and help you improve your technique faster.

What to look for when choosing a racket for a beginner?

  • Large racket head (102-105 sq. inches)
A larger racket surface makes it easier to hit the ball and achieve greater hitting power thanks to the trampoline effect.

  • Low weight (255-270 g)
A lighter racket allows for easier maneuvering, so you'll master the correct technique faster. Additionally, this reduces the risk of arm strain and injuries.

  • Material – graphite, graphite composite, or bonded graphite
The best choice is graphite, which provides optimal vibration absorption and playing comfort. If you play occasionally, avoid cheap aluminum rackets – they do not provide adequate quality and comfort.

Summary: If you're just starting your adventure with tennis, choose a racket with a larger head, lightweight construction, and made of good quality materials.

Racket for Intermediate Tennis Players

Players who train regularly (e.g., twice a month or more often) and work with a coach should opt for more advanced equipment.

What characteristics should a racket for an intermediate player have?

  • Material – 100% graphite
A graphite racket absorbs vibrations better, which reduces the risk of injury and improves playing comfort. Furthermore, it transfers energy more effectively, meaning more powerful shots with less effort.

  • Slightly heavier weight (up to 285g for men, up to 270g for women)
A heavier racket provides greater stability and control over shots, which is crucial at a higher level of play.

  • Smaller racket head (100-102 sq. inches)
A slightly smaller head surface improves ball control and allows for more precise shot direction.

Summary: If you play regularly, opt for a graphite racket with a smaller head and heavier weight to improve your game control.

Why is it worth matching the racket to your playing level?

  • Beginner player → larger head, lightweight construction, playing comfort.
  • Intermediate player → more precise control, heavier weight, better hitting power.

Choosing the right racket is key to success on the court.
